A Delaware judge on Friday ordered a man who twice exposed himself to a 10-year-old girl at his workplace to wear a T-shirt with the words: “I am a registered sex offender” in bold letters, a prosecutor said.
Man ordered to wear “sex offender” T-shirt – Yahoo! News
A man with at least ten convictions for exposing himself to children was sentenced to sixty days in jail and, upon his release, has to wear a shirt that clearly states he is a sex offender. The man has to wear the shirt for a little less than two years.
I think this is a very good sentence. The man has convictions that date back to the 1970′s. Obviously what ever his previous punishments were, they did not work well. The shirt by itself doesn’t seem like a huge punishment, it almost sounds like something you would find in Spencer’s or something, which doesn’t say much for our society. The shirt allows the community to deal with the man’s punishment. The article says that the man runs a gardening business with his wife. It is beyond fair that customers know who they are dealing with. Customers should know that if they are bringing their children to this place, they could be placing them in a dangerous situation.
The man was diagonsed as a ‘complusive exhibitionist’. First of all, I don’t think I fully agree with exhibtionism as a disease. I think if you are risking the well-being of the community, especially children, you should be in some kind of treatment. I don’t know what treatment someone with chronic exhibitionism would undergo, something with lots of buttons and zippers I would assume.
I think that all sex-offenders should have a shirt, or a hat or something that warns people they could be in danger. I understand that for some sex offenders, it truly is a disease and they don’t have control of themselves. No matter what the cause, they are still a risk and a danger to the general population.

I dont understand why this man who expose himself to a bunch children. First of all, that’s totally sick. And second of all, if he already had some sort of convictions in the first place, why would he draw more attention to himself? sex offenders confuse me, because I don’t understand hwat enjoyment they get out of children…. it’s so digusting!

I don’t think the shirt is a good punishment. He should be put in jail for a longer amount of time and then be put on probation for what he has done. Wearing a shirt might be embarassing, but he will get over it. It seems to be more childish if anything. If this man really has convictions dating back into the 70′s then WHY is this man going to be let back out on the streets? He is obviously a huge pervert who should be kept behind bars… or at least indoors.

Like you said that shirt is just like any other shirt you would pick up at Spencer’s in the mall. How can a shirt be such a punishment? That will not stop him from committing the same crime again. He is out in public where he was when he committed the crime before. Yes I agree sex offenders are a risk to the community and public, but some do change there lives around. People change and that might be contradicting what I said about committing the crime again, but it depends on the person. I don’t understand sex offenders and there mind state and thinking, but i never will. I think the reason why they have this punishment with the shirt is because it costs millions of dollars to keep these offenders in prison, so instead they give them another chance. If they mess up again they will be right back in prison. I’m not sure if everyone shoudl know about a sex offender or not it depends on the offense. This man only has to wear this shirt at work? does that mean he doesnt have to wear it in public? This is pretty hardcore if you ask me. There are so many things I agree with and disagree with in your blog , but you made some good points!

Your blog came up on the 1st page of my searches under ‘exhibitionism’… I enjoy reading your “news and sidenotes”.
On this topic, however, I always feel like I need to reel people back in from the ensuing witch hunt.
I don’t think that T-shirts and items in the newspaper and buttons and public registrations are the best idea for sex offenders in the long run… at least they are not the best idea for society because they encourage vigilante justice. What will be the accountability for the courts and police when people finally get so worked up over it that they begin killing and vandalizing.
Is a child molestation of equal value to a murder? You tell me. Is public humiliation maybe also a sentence to be attacked by people on the street, spit at, have your job taken away from you?
And please don’t take this as statement that I condone child abuse because I do NOT but isn’t being harrassed and abused by the general public for the remainder of your days a little harder to deal with then seeing a penis for the first time?
I think the T-shirt punishment is actually very harsh – but at the same time useless.
Could you keep a drug addict clean by taking their picture as they are leaving an NA meeting? I hardly think so.
